The CitizenM tower of london hotel…

Kicking back and relaxing at CitizenM (the second of a four-part series.)  For those who think London is stodgy and lacking in forward-thinking design, your perception will be turned on its head with the collection of CitizenM Hotel properties throughout this great cosmopolitan city.

We stayed in their Tower of London property and you could not ask for a more convenient location, i.e., above the Tower Hill Underground station, across from the historic Tower of London and well within view of The Shard.

There are a number of ways to reach the property from Heathrow International and they are all affordable and reliable :

― Heathrow Connect links to rail stations downtown
― Heathrow Express links to Paddington Station
― Rail-Air Bus Links
― Underground

Each is more than acceptable and involves transferring from one mode of transportation to another, not an issue if you have the luxury of time.  We were arriving in London early in the morning, however, and were planning on remaining in the United Kingdom for a couple of weeks.  As a result, we had more luggage than we were accustomed to.  We opted, therefore, to reserve a car service at Heathrow and the airport’s website provided myriad choices at competitive rates and more importantly, fixed prices.  It was well worth it as the driver was very prompt; friendly; handled all our bags; and had us at the CitizenM in 45 minutes―near miraculous as this was at morning rush hour.

Don’t let the Bauhaus style of the hotel’s exterior fool you.  Although the rooms themselves are a tribute to Scandinavian minimalism, the public spaces are a design aficionado’s dream come true.  The editors of Wallpaper* magazine would be proud.

There’s a coffee bar located at the entrance where lattes and cappuccinos can be ordered and enjoyed near the large windows looking out onto the city.

Arriving and obtaining your room keys is a breeze and to save time, you can check in online prior.  Elevators nearby whisk you to your room, all of which are arranged around an atrium.  Being the CitizenM, this is no bland hotel open space―no, this is an art installation.

The lounges scattered throughout the first floor and top of the building invite long conversations, more often than not, well into sunrise.

The hotel’s cantina is also located on the first floor and features coffee beverages to order, great breakfasts, take away available 24 hours a day and an excellent bar staff.  One of the features we love about this hotel is their breakfast plan, which can be pre-ordered for a nominal cost and includes a number of cold and hot items from American, English and Scandinavian menus.

“The morning cup of coffee has an exhilaration about it which the cheering influence of the afternoon or evening cup of tea cannot be expected to reproduce.” ― Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.

And during happy hour, their signature cocktails are handcrafted by artisans and are unique to each property.  We quickly made friends with Jacqueline, Matt and Navid, all of whom are CitizenM Ambassadors and went out of their way to make our stay special.
